How do you start to write a CV?
Highlight the good points of your experience and skills. This means portraying what you have done and what you know in the best possible way;
Play down any weaknesses in your history. This means minimizing any less successful times and covering up any gaps;
Portray your career as consistent and show clearly what you have to offer.
How long should a CV be?
- Most CVs should be limited to just two sheets of A4 paper or three at the very most.
- Sometimes there may be justification for a slightly longer document but this only happens occasionally. Some examples could be
- You have had many different jobs and have worked for many years;
- You are in the entertainment business with many different appearances to list, or in a creative or academic role with productions or written work to describe
- You have traveled extensively with your work, e.g. with the armed services.
Dos and don’ts
- Do see writing your CV as a worthwhile and rewarding task.
- Do look at as many other people’s CVs as you can for inspiration.
- Do think about the kind of impression you want to convey to employers.
- Do spend time thinking about the skills and qualities that are seen as valuable for the kind of position you are looking for.
- Do spend some time looking at job adverts in your field to see specifically what employers are asking for.
- Don’t think of this as a chore make up your mind to enjoy creating your CV.
- Don’t reinvent the wheel use good examples that you see in other CVs.
- Don’t be too honest! We are aiming to minimize weaker areas and promote your good points.
- Don’t hesitate! Get going on your first draft right now.
- Don’t worry if there are some bits of information missing at this stage. You can fill in the gaps later on.
